When most people think about egypt, one of the things that come to mind is the Great Pyramids of Ancient Egypt. There are three pyramids in the giza plateau, the Great Pyramid of Khufu, built for the pharoah Khufu as a tomb and the only wonder of the 7 wonders of the ancient world left standing, the Pyramid of Khafre, located on the northern side of the giza plateau and 3 metres shorter than the Pyramid of Khufu, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, which is shorter in size than the other two pyramids. There are also many other pyramids in Egypt, such as King Djoser's "Step Pyramid", overlooking the capital Memphis, and King Sneferu's "Red Pyramid" in Dashur.
There are many different theories to why the Ancient Egyptians built the pyramids. Some Egyptologists think that the pyramids were ment to be staircases to heaven, while others think that they represent the mound of earth that civilization was created on. Other theories include that the pyramids are made to represent the suns rays. Another thing that Egyptologists have yet to find an answer for is the question of how the Egyptians managed to get the huge stone blocks up the pyramids without any transportation or simple machines. Ideas range from UFO's to thousands of men hauling the stones up mud covered ramps.
Because the Egyptians believed strongly in the afterlife, the pharoahs took great care in making shure that they had everything they would need in the otherworld. Inside the chambers for the pharoah, there would be rooms filled with worldly goods for the pharoah to take with them into the afterlife. Also, there would be special dolls called Shabtis included in the possessions. Shabtis were magical figures made to look like people. The Egyptians believed that these figures would do the work of the pharoah so he would be able to live peacefully.
