Getting Foods in Egypt

The Ancient Egyptians were lucky enough to live on very fertile lands. Because they lived near the Nile River the lands were perfect for farming. The water from the Nile irrigated the soil, and the river provided fish as well as fresh drinking water. The waters also attracted many animals looking for a cool place to drink. This made the river a good place for the Egyptian farmers to catch livestock. Because of the lands abundance, all of the Ancient Egyptians, poor or wealthy, always had enough to eat.

A Poor Family's Menu

Even though they weren't as wealthy as the rich Egyptians, poor and middle class Egyptians still had enough food to eat and maintained healthy diets. Meals incuded bread, beans, onions, leeks and other vegetables, grapes, pomegranates and other fruits, and fish caught in the Nile river. Because they needed lots of room for crops, there was little room for livestock. This made meat very expensive, so other than the occasional pork, ordinary Egyptians rarely ate meat. The lower class Egyptians brewed their own beer from barley for drinking. Once it was boiled, water was also a popular drink for common folk, because it was easily got from the Nile river. Common Egyptian families ate off clay bowls and plates while sitting on the floor.

A Rich Family's Menu

Even though the Rich people of Ancient egypt were much wealthier than the common families, the meals that they ate were not much different. Just like the common folk, they ate fruits and vegetables like grapes and leeks, fresh bread (of better quality most likely) and fish caught in the river. However, because of their wealth, the richer Egyptians were able to pay the expensive prices for meats like roasts. For drinking, they also drank home-brewed barley beer and water, along with different wines and milk. The rich egyptians ate off of gold, silver or bronze platters, bowls and plates. They sat on the ground on cushions and ate with their fingers like all Egyptians.
